Furnace or A/C Trouble
Furnace or A/C Trouble
If your heating or cooling system isn’t running as it should, don’t worry — many issues can be fixed with a few quick checks.
Try these steps before scheduling a service call — they may save you time, money, and frustration.
Before You Call for Service — Check These First
Check Your Air Filter
- Your furnace filter also works for your furnace or air conditioner.
- If it’s dirty or restrictive, airflow is reduced, and your system may shut down. Dirty filters are the second most common cause of service calls.
- Make sure the filter is clean, properly installed, and replaced regularly.
Verify the Power Switch
- There’s a light switch near or on the furnace that controls power to the unit.
- It’s common for this switch to get turned off accidentally.
- Turn it back on and see if your system starts working again.
Check the Breaker or Fuse
Go to your main electrical panel and check for tripped breakers or blown fuses.
- Furnace or air conditioner usually have two fuses or a double-wide breaker.
- You may also have a gray disconnect box near your outdoor A/C unit.
- Make sure everything is in the “ON” position.
Make Sure Furnace Doors Are Installed Properly
If the furnace panel doors are not secured correctly, a safety switch will cut power to the system.
Double-check that both doors are fitted snugly and latched.
For High-Efficiency Furnaces
If your furnace vents through plastic PVC pipes, inspect the drain and vent system.
- A clogged drain trap (common in Carrier, Bryant, and Payne models from 1994–2014) can shut your system down.
- Make sure outdoor vent pipes are clear of snow, frost, or debris, as blockages can cause pressure switch faults.
Clean the Flame Sensor
- A dirty flame sensor is the #1 heating issue we see every winter.
- If your furnace lights briefly and then shuts off, this is often the culprit.
- If you’re comfortable doing basic maintenance, you can clean it yourself — search “how to clean a furnace flame sensor” on YouTube for a simple guide.
