Why I Prefer Simple, Reliable Equipment

I prefer to sell basic, dependable furnaces — they’re easier and cheaper to repair, and they last longer.
It’s a good middle ground between efficiency and repair affordability.

Single Stage vs. Two Stage Furnaces

Let’s clear up a common misconception:
Two-stage heating doesn’t actually save gas — a BTU is a BTU.
So why choose it?
Because two-stage heat improves comfort during milder weather.
The furnace runs longer on low fire, distributing even heat instead of short-cycling on and off like a single-stage furnace.
This also means less wear and tear on the gas valve and blower motor since it doesn’t start and stop as frequently.
That said, I don’t recommend installing an 80% efficient two-stage furnace — the risk of chimney condensation is too high in our Minnesota climate.

80% vs. 97% Efficiency — What’s Right for You?

In 1999, building codes started requiring 90%+ efficiency furnaces in new homes.
These units vent with plastic PVC pipes and include condensing drain systems that must stay clear to function.
An 80% furnace, by contrast, uses a metal vent and has fewer parts that can fail.
If you’re replacing an existing 80% furnace, staying with 80% can save you around $1,000 upfront and reduce long-term maintenance costs.
However, upgrading to a 90–97% model is often worthwhile when venting is accessible, offering lower fuel use and eligibility for rebates.

It’s Not Just the Brand — It’s the Installation

About 95% of modern furnaces use HSI ignition and operate similarly across brands. So the most important factor isn’t the brand name — it’s who installs it. Poor installation shortens equipment life. A properly installed furnace can easily last decades. When you call Ed’s Heating & Air, you’re not dealing with a salesperson or a random technician

Ready for Service You Can Count On?

If these checks don’t resolve your issue, it’s best to have a professional take a look. Faulty wiring, power surges, or incorrectly programmed thermostats can damage your furnace or air conditioner.

At Ed’s Heating & Air, we’ll test your thermostat, verify wiring and voltage, and install a reliable replacement if needed — without the upsell.
